Site advises on cutting young drivers' insurance costs
A price comparison site has issued tips to young drivers to help them cut the cost of punitive car insurance premiums.
Research conducted by moneysupermarket.com found that a 17-year-old driver who has just passed his test can expect to pay £2,841 for motor insurance.
Meanwhile, a girl of the same age would typically pay £1,600.
However, according to Paul Gerrard, head of insurance research at the site, a number of ways exist to cut this outlay.
Mr Gerrard said: "Younger drivers eager to get behind the wheel this summer may be shocked by how expensive their insurance premiums are.
"I advise taking a Pass Plus course, adding an older driver to your policy and consider buying an older car which may be easier to insure. Considering a higher excess on your policy will also keep your premium down."
Also recommended was only driving at certain hours of the day and shopping around for the cheapest cover.
