esure warns over badly gritted roads
Badly gritted roads are set to see a rash of car accidents this winter, it has been predicted.
According to data from car insurance provider esure, wintry conditions and the failure of local authorities to clear roads properly means that British motorists typically experience 31 per cent more accidents in winter than in the summer.
The high incidence of crashes is confirmed by the level of claims received by the insurer this November , which last £130,000.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure, said it was the duty of councils to take more effective action to mitigate the risk of accidents.
He commented: "It is clear that some local councils could be doing more during winter to ensure all small roads in their area are gritted thoroughly, to help improve the dangerous driving conditions for motorists.
"It is of the utmost importance to be aware of road safety during the winter months and to judge carefully when it is safe to drive. esure is calling for all motorists to change their own driving style, take precautions by gritting their own driveways and being more conscious of safety issues."
