The next generation prototype of the smart fortwo is to be unveiled this month for the first time in the US at the NAIAS Autoshow, with the public showing taking place between January 17th and January 25th.
Smart are aiming towards the end of 2009, for the smart fortwo to include a lithium-ion battery, this will offer motorists higher performance and shorter gear changing times and greater reliability, compared to those using other battery types. To help the progression of the smart fortwo, since 2007 a pilot project has been underway in London to test the long-term sustainability of some of the alternative technologies it uses.
Some 100 electric smart cars were leased by the manufacturer, customers lease the vehicles for up to fur years or untill they reach 40,000 miles. Customers feedback was very encouraging and positive.
London was seen to be the perfect destination to host the pilot trials due to its high traffic levels and obvious parking shortages.
