Car insurance dodgers face criminal record
Cash-strapped motorists have been warned of the perils of trying to cut costs by neglecting to take out car insurance.
Insurer RIAS issued its warning to UK motorists in the wake of mounting evidence that the soaring cost of running a car is prompting people to cut corners.
Among the consequences of being found without car insurance is that drivers could find they are given a criminal record, the company said.
Janet Connor, managing director of RIAS, said: "There is no question that driving without insurance is both unlawful and ill-advised.
"If you are worried about the cost of insurance, it is worth talking to your insurance provider to check whether they are any savings to be made"
Last year, around 160 deaths and 23,000 injuries were caused in road accidents involving uninsured drivers, according to research from the Motor Investigation Bureau.
