Mobile phone convictions ’send car insurance costs soaring’

Car insurance companies are hitting drivers who are convicted of using mobile phones when driving with punitive premiums, it has been claimed.

AA Insurance studied the impact of a conviction for mobile phone use on the cost of cover by collating a panel of 20 insurance companies which it uses to provide quotes for its customers. The company found that those found guilty of the offence can expect to pay £163;40 more per year for their car insurance. This rises to £163;100 per year over the offence period.

News of the research’s findings comes as it was today announced that motorists who kill while using a mobile are to face 14-year jail sentences. Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: We’re not surprised that such a strict sentence has been brought in and insurance companies are quite rightly taking an equally dim view of such offences.

While today’s news will no doubt make the public think twice about using their phone while driving, many will still not be aware that their insurance premiums will rise.
