Car insurance body calls for crackdown on uninsured motorists
The British Insurance Brokers Association (Biba) has called on the government to launch a publicity campaign to highlight the dangers of driving uninsured and commit money to a body to enforce newly introduced regulations.
Biba issued the call in the wake of findings from the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) showing that uninsured drivers cost some £500 million every year.
This is despite the fact that in 2006 the government granted new powers to the police to crack down on uninsured driving.
As a result, Biba chief executive Eric Galbraith has called for more drastic action to tackle the problem.
He said: "The government has been dragging its feet on drafting new regulations which are desperately needed to help tackle uninsured driving in the UK.
"I am calling on Ruth Kelly and her team to do their utmost to set these regulations in motion at the earliest opportunity."
According to the MIB, the cost of compensating drivers for incidents involving uninsured drivers adds £30 to car insurance premiums.
